Our Adventure Begins...

Monday Night: We have arrived in Hawai'i!! After a 10+ hour trip from Atlanta and through LA, we finally landed in Maui, the Kahului (pronounced Kaa-hoo-loo-e...in Hawaiian you pronounce every syllable) Airport. John, Gavin's biological dad, picked us up, and we drove 30 minutes on a winding road up the mountain to his house in Mulohia (Mu-low-hee-a) Heights. We landed at 8:45pm Hawai'i time (1:45am Atlanta time), and we were exhausted and hungry. When we arrived at John's house, his wife Kalele (Ku-lay-lay) who is part Hawaiian, part Japanese and part Chinese had made us dinner. She had made us noodles with shrimp stock, wontons, green onions and charsu (a sweet pork). It was really good! After dinner, we headed upstairs to bed, exhausted from our trip.

Tuesday: We woke up early to the sunshine coming into our bedroom window (meanwhile Cumming was covered in 3 inches of snow). Lindsay had to stay in Atlanta until Tuesday because of a photo shoot, so Gavin, Chris and I went to La Perouse Bay to snorkel. We had never been snorkeling before, and it was amazing!!! It was incredible to see the ocean that way. I felt like we were in "The Little Mermaid" checking out the view under the sea. We were basically swimming next to some of the most beautiful fish I have ever seen. There were schools of fish eating the coral literally less than a foot away from us. Gavin had been snorkeling before so he showed us how to dive with our snorkels. We swam around for over 2 hours! When we finished, we headed up the road to a little grill stand. Chris and I had fish tacos, and Gav had a plate lunch with Ono fish, coconut rice and fresh fruit sprinkled with this really good seasoning. After we filled up on lunch, we drove around the island. Gavin was our tour guide, showing us the best surf spots and some of the most beautiful landscapes that I have ever seen! We drove around for a few hours, stopping at Whaler's Village to shop and at Honaloa (Hon-a-low-a) Bay to watch the surfers. Finally we headed back to John's house. We ate dinner...John cooked this baked chicken in a white wine sauce, red potatoes and green beans...yum! After dinner we drove down the mountain to the airport to pick up Lindsay. When we got back to the house, we showered and went to sleep.

Wednesday: We woke up and ate breakfast (eggs, fruit and toast with liliquoi (lil-i-coy, which is passion fruit) butter...awesome! We threw on our bathing suits and headed to Baldwin Beach in Paia (Pie-e-a) Bay. It was super windy! Gavin and Chris body surfed in the waves while Linds and I layed on the beach. It started to rain, so we sat in the car for a few minutes until it passed. Finally the sun came out, so we went and layed on the beach while Chris and Gav finished playing in the waves. We started to get hungry, so we walked into Paia to eat lunch. There is a grocery store called Manna Foods (kinda like a local Whole Foods) that had a lunch section. We bought some lunch went outside and ate on some rocks. While we were walking back to the car, we stopped and bought some gelato. I had a green tea mint with lemongrass...so good and refreshing! We got back to the car and drove to get some coffee at Maui Coffee Roasters. They had small cups of coffee for $1.00! We bought a half pound of Kauai Peaberry coffee to brew for breakfast. We left the coffee shop and drove back up the mountain to John's. The four of us just sat around in the kitchen talking and looking at pictures. We finally showered and headed back down the mountain for dinner. We went back to Paia and ate at this pizza place called Flatbreads. They ground their own flour to make organic dough and all the ingredients were organic. It was probably some of the best pizza that I have ever eaten. After stuffing ourselves, we drove home and went to sleep.
